Barkers \\ The Modern Gentleman

Barkers have been part of our Wild Hearts events for the last 3 years, at our Wild Hearts Auckland Wedding Fair and inspiring Grooms around the country on our Wild Hearts Runways.

Celebrating the modern New Zealand gentleman, Barkers ethos is “Life is made for living and we’re made for life.” Creating a range of suiting and menswear to fit into our ever changing surrounding environments in New Zealand – from historic churches, to wild oceanscapes and to the top of the snow-capped southern alps. No matter where your Wedding destination is the team at Barkers have you covered, from the classic black tuxedo, to the more adventurous casual Groom look.

They offer a wide range of personalised planning services to take care of the groom and his main men in the build-up to the big day. We chatted to the team at Barkers to get some advice on how to make you look your best on your wedding day.

How early should men be looking at what they want to wear for their wedding day?

It’s a good idea to start planning or looking for inspiration online for look you want to achieve well in advance, at least to make sure that it all ties in with the bride/bridesmaids plans or so that they can follow your lead. As far as actual shopping and purchasing, 3 months or so before the wedding tends to work, far enough away from the big day so that you can shop around and round up your team to get everyone styled and clothes fitted/altered in time but close enough to the wedding  that the product still suits the season, you don’t want a heavy flannel blazer bought mid-winter to wear in the middle of summer.

What services do you offer for men in the preparation of, and on their wedding day?

Barkers offers a wide range of wedding services, from custom made to measure suits and blazers and off the shelf groomsman package deals to the perfect haircut and cut throat shave to ensure there’s not a hair out of place on the big day. Pop into store or check out website for full details.

What direction do you believe mens fashion is heading in, and what trends do you see upcoming in the wedding industry?

Casualization of men’s fashion is very apparent across all genres currently, even the traditional business institutions of the world that were the last strong hold for the suit and tie are relaxing their dress codes. This could mean two things for the wedding industry, a lot of weddings will follow the casualization trend with relaxed dressing and soft unstructured tailoring. On the other hand it will also become the last excuse for some to dress up and they will go all out on the outfit and go as smart as possible with made to measure unique suits and tuxedos leading the way, it’s the middle ground with more regular suiting styles that will be the loser in this battle.

Who are some style icons that inspire the team at Barkers?

There are too many to name, we seek inspiration from such a wide array of people. Timeless and effortless style is key though.
